A police station is a great place to teach your kids about safety issues and the work police officers do to protect your local community. Police Stations offer tours, calling the station to set up a date and time to bring your kids in is important. This way, the station is expecting you, and someone will be available to show you around, as well as to answer questions and help kids learn about the police station. One of the primary things kids learn when visiting the police station is personal safety. Kids will learn how to call 911 in an emergency, ways to protect themselves and how to avoid dangerous situations. Kids also learn what happens when a person is arrested, how police equipment works and how it helps officers do their job. Discuss with your kids some of the potentially scary or dangerous things you may encounter at a police station. There may be criminals or other individuals passing through who may be intimidating to children. Police officers handle weapons and other items that need to be treated with caution and respect. A police station is not a safe environment for your child to explore on his or her own.
Call or visit your local Police Station to set-up a free tour!
There’s also a Los Angeles Police Museum for kids that are interested in becoming Police Officers.
